Camberley

Introduction

'The ford town', over 1000 years old, is so-named as it is situated on a part of the River Wey which was shallow enough to be forded. Guildford lies in a gap in the North Downs hills, leading the Normans to build a castle here in the 12th century to protect this strategically important location. A cathedral was built in Guildford in 1936-54 and the town is also home to the University of Surrey, on Stag Hill. The modern architecture of the cathedral and the university contrasts with the older town centre. The Royal Grammar School is also located in the town.
